Study Progress
Editor's note. Long-term follow-up was the heart of the LABS study: the value of its bariatric surgery outcome data depended on participants returning every year. This archived page tracked retention — 2,309 of 2,458 participants reported their weight at year 1, and 2,247 at year 2 — and encouraged the rest to complete their annual visits. The progress charts were not preserved in the Internet Archive.
Only YOU can help us to reach our goal of 100% retention
The Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery is a national study with 10 clinical centers across the country. To help us paint an accurate picture of life after bariatric surgery it is vitally important that 100% of our participants return each year for their annual visits. Regardless of where you are in your weight loss journey, whether you’ve gained or lost weight, we hope to see you at your annual LABS visit!
As of October 31, 2011 nearly all of LABS participants have reached or surpassed their 2-year surgery anniversary.
At Year 1, 2309 of 2458 reported their weight to a LABS coordinator:

For 2012, we will be tracking how many participants report their weight by month. By the end of July, 1358 participants reported a weight:

You can help out your site and the entire LABS study by attending an in-person visit, talking to your site coordinator over the phone, filling out and mailing back an annual questionnaire packet, or by scheduling a home visit from our partners at EMSI.
Moving forward, we will update these thermometers monthly to reflect the activity of each site. Check back often to follow the progress of your site and watch as your number is added to the count!
